The southern arm of the medieval moat at Timperley Old Hall in early June 2020

I’m glad to be able to report that since the 4th July we have been able to access the STAG headquarters once more, though not for meetings. Sadly, fieldwork is still not possible, and we are still a few months away from hosting group meetings, although this does give us the opportunity to tidy and clear out the storage space at our headquarters.

The variable summer weather has meant that the water level in the Timperley Old Hall moat continues to yo-yo, whilst the vegetation encroaches. On the plus side Jenny’s broad beans are doing very nicely on the moat allotments! In other news the Roman samian pottery studied by Felicity Wild has been returned and is ready for photographing. I have been hunting for the remains of the Altrincham Gas railway line on Moss Lane (so far located are a few in-situ stone sets near Jewson’s builders’ yard). Finally, the Grade II listed Linotype engine house in Broadheath is under threat of demolition. Apparently, it will cost more than anticipated to refurbish it.
